The eastern county of Norfolk is a popular holiday destination for many as among the seaside towns and villages, all with their own quirks and quaint attractions, this area of England offers something absolutely unique – the Norfolk Broads, an area of wetland that is of great scientific and natural importance and one that also offers a great holiday opportunity thanks to the network of canals and waterways.
For many a holiday on The Broads is unsurpassable, an experience so leisurely and relaxing that it feels as though a lifetime has passed in a few days, and with the unique and beautiful landscape and scenery, let alone the wealth of wildlife, to take in there can be few less stressful activities than cruising on a boat.
For those looking for something a little more exciting Norfolk also has much to offer, and the town of Great Yarmouth – one of the most popular destinations on the east coast – has a character all of its own.
For a start there is the exciting and invigorating pleasure beach, complete with the usual rollercoaster and log flume, right on the beach in the town, while there are galleries and exhibitions for the art lover, many of which concentrate on the local artists and craftsmen who have made the area famous. Eating out is a joy in Great Yarmouth – and, indeed, along the entire coast – especially of you favour seafood, for fresh produce is landed daily and there are many excellent restaurants to choose from, or simply a mammoth portion of fish and chips!
The lovely towns of Swaffam and Dereham demand a visit as they are redolent of traditional Norfolk style, for this is a part of the country that has its own character and nature, and one that is very much proud of its heritage.
The North Norfolk Heritage coast is an area protected for its special interests, a coastline that offers much in the way of beauty and originality and one that is well worth a visit. All along the Norfolk coast there are market towns selling fresh produce and other goods, all with a fine selection of cafes and bars for you to sample a relaxing break.
A variety of holiday parks, hotels and other accommodation offer great places to stay in many destinations, from the inland towns of Thetford and Diss to the coastal fishing towns of Cromer and Burnham Market, and there is much to choose from in terms of price and berths.
Norfolk will, however, forever be associated with the Broads, and it is to this unique natural location that we return for another look. With 120 miles of navigable waterways – rivers and lakes and the broads themselves – this is a fantastic opportunity for a boating holiday like no other, and the special and emphatic beauty of the area makes them absolutely a must when it comes to places to visit. Norfolk, as we have seen, has much to offer the tourist and the family holidaymaker, and is within easy reach of major road and rail networks.
