England’s northernmost county may seem to be a world away from those in the south, but Northumberland is truly one of the understated delights in terms of UK tourism. An ancient and historic land with ties to the very origins of Christianity in the UK, as well as the greatest remaining Roman fortifications in the world, Northumberland is a county of differences and interest, and one that is very beautiful indeed.
From the inland areas of the Tyne Valley – with such wonderful towns as Hexham, complete with an amazing abbey and many other stunning buildings – and the fellow market town of Corbridge – to the gorgeous Coquet valley in the north, complete with pretty towns such as Warkworth, the Northumbrian landscape is defined by the lie of the land, but towards the coast in the south east of the county is a very different landscape indeed.
Here the coast offers some absolutely stunning beaches – try the glorious Druridge Bay, south of the beautiful seaside town of Amble, or the stunning sands at Bamburgh with its brooding and majestic castle and a museum dedicated to the world famous Grace Darling and her daring rescue of a doomed ship’s crew – and vast parkland, much of it created on land reclaimed from the now dead coal mining industry which, for a long time, was the life and soul of the area.
Near the town of Ashington – once dubbed ‘the biggest pit village in the world’ and a football citadel that gave us the Charlton brothers and Newcastle United legend Jackie Milburn – is Woodhorn Colliery Museum, one of the most visited museums in the country with excellent exhibitions on the industry, while nearby Bedlington – itself a former mining town – has the relics of a once mighty ironworks which heralded the very birthday of railways as we know them.
Farther north is the beautiful market town of Alnwick where not only is there a single file remaining gate house through which traffic must pass to enter the town but there stands the second biggest inhabited castle in the country – Alnwick Castle – home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and adjacent to the simply stunning Alnwick Gardens, complete with enormous tree house and restaurant created by the Duchess herself for future generations. An aside to popular culture, those who are fans of Harry Potter may recognise the castle as the location for the first two films.
County town Morpeth is a busy and very attractive town with a superb park and a very interesting stand-alone clock tower, one that has an interesting history, and is also home to a number of fine pubs and some excellent clubs for a night out, while just fifteen miles south, although not in Northumberland but in the county of Tyne and Wear, is the ‘party capital of Europe’ Newcastle upon Tyne, a place where a night out in the Bigg Market is a must and, during the daylight hours, a walk down Grey Street – thought by many to be the most beautiful street in England – must be undertaken.
