There are few more romantic areas of Great Britain than the Lake District, the part of England where William Wordsworth wrote the bulk of his work, as the dramatic vista of the lakes and the rolling hills makes this a tranquil yet exciting place to spend time. Cumbria is a prime holiday location in the UK, and the Lake District National Park a national wonder that is famous across the world.

It’s not all about lakes, however, for there are some truly beautiful towns and villages to visit: try Grasmere, where Dove Cottage – the home of Wordsworth and now a museum dedicated to him – is a typically beautiful house, and the famous towns of Keswick and Kendal, renowned as centres for those who take great comfort in walking the revered routes that traverse this wonderful part of England.

Where the lakes themselves are concerned the are some truly stunning sites: the tranquillity of Windermere, one of the most beautiful locations in the world and a simply stunning setting for any visit, or the beauty of Coniston Water where speed record attempts have been made – successfully and unsuccessfully – back in the days when brave men took their high speed craft onto the quiet waters of the long lake. These are iconic places, lakes that have literary and historical connections galore, and places where the spice of life is simply to relax, enjoy and take in nature as it was intended to be.

The beautiful town of Ambleside is a favourite for many, a place where you can visit the delightful Rydal Mount – another former home of Wordsworth – and its attached gardens, or use it as a site for a cruise on the adjacent Lake Windermere, a must for any visitor to the Lake District. Kendal offer some excellent museums and places to eat and have a drink, while Keswick is home to the unlikeliest museum in the world – the Pencil Museum – but one that is rated among the very best in the country thanks to its quirky approach to a surprisingly interesting subject.

These are just some of the towns that the Lake District boasts, for this is an area of diversity and interest, of originality and surprises, but more than anything it is the breathtaking landscape that draws visitors from all across the world.

Hardened walkers revel in the hills and valleys that pepper this quite spectacular area, and the very fact that it is among the most popular of Britain’s National Park locations says a lot. There is something to be said for an area that offers the very best in walking, boating, fishing and eating, and the many pubs across the location will entice drinkers, especially those interested in the locally produced real ales.

With a great number of towns to choose from the Lake District has much to offer in the way of accommodation, from excellent hotels to enjoyable guest houses, to holiday parks and caravan and camping sites, making this the prime place for anyone looking for either a relaxing break or an action packed holiday.
