The Argyll area in Scotland is one of the most dramatic in terms of scenery and coastline and, among the many islands and more, offers a fantastic holiday destination for those seeking a quiet break or families looking for a fun holiday. This is an area replete with inbuilt romance and, as such, is very popular with couples wanting a romantic break, and with a wide range of excellent hotels, holiday parks and other accommodation the Argyll holiday is a popular choice among growing numbers of people each year.
Scotland has its own character after all, but Argyll is one different again: this is an area characterised by the ruggedness and beauty of Campbeltown and the famous Mull of Kyntire as well as by the mysterious islands of Islay, Jura and Colonsay, and as such is a place where variety is present all round. From the beauty of the mountains to the force and freedom of the sea, it’s all here to enjoy and experience.
The stunning islands of Jura, Islay and Colonsay are accessible by ferry or fast boat and offer a unique experience; the islands make up a wildlife sanctuary predominated by the internationally recognised bird sanctuary on Loch Indaal, and there is much to see if you are one who carries binoculars and revels in the local fauna and flora. The red deer on Jura are famous the world over, but maybe not as famous as the bleak and stunning islands most popular product: while Jura produces only one whisky, perhaps Scotland’s most famous product, the neighbouring Islay produces several that are revered by connoisseurs the world over, including the legendary Laphroig, Bowmore and Lagavulin. Visits to some of the distilleries can be arranged and the fascinating history of the Scottish whisky industry is one that is well worth hearing – especially when accompanied by samples!
Another group of Islands that are worth visiting is comprised of Mull and Iona, both famous for very different reasons these days: Tobermory, the principal town on Mull, is the setting for the children’s programme ‘Balamory’ and its colourful buildings will be recognisable to an entire generation, while Iona is regarded as one of the homes of Christianity in the UK, with the Abbey of St Columba a famous landmark.
Back on the main land and the premier town in the area is Campbeltown, once the domain of airmen from the nearby US and UK airbase at Macrihanish but now a quiet and attractive town typical of the area, and again this is a part of the Argyll district that is of great historical interest for there are signs of ancient settlements all around.
The Argyll area is one that offers many different types of holiday, from lying on the beautiful sands of Colonsay to exploring the islands for their historical aspects, or from visiting distilleries and sampling their wares, but the certainty of a warm welcome at one of the many hotels or holiday parks that can be found across the area ensures this is a popular destination indeed.
