Ayrshire Holiday Guide

Whether you are on a tight budget or like to splash out a bit on you well deserved break – you’re sure to find something to suit you in Ayrshire.

There are no big cities in Ayrshire, the largest town is Ayr, a lovely seaside town with a beautiful sandy beach and an excellent shopping centre. Most of South Ayshire is very rural, made up of lovely small towns, villages and agricultural land. North and East Ayrshire have more industry, but the decline of the steel and coal business means there have been many changes over the last few years. The Ayrshire coast once a magnet for the citizens of Glasgow during their annual ‘Fair Fortnight’ saw a bit of a decline during the 80’s and 90’s as people discovered package holidays to Spain etc., but is now experiencing a revival as trends are changing with an increasing number of people are holidaying in the UK.

Famous for its excellent golf, Ayrshire has in excess of 20 golf courses scattered throughout the county, from championship courses such as Royal Troon and Turnberry to more modest municipal courses. These range from 9 hole short but testing to 19 hole very challenging and demanding. Prices vary from £20 up to well over £200 for a round.

Fishing is a popular pastime favoured by many, with river fishing on the Stinchar, the River Ayr, the River Girvan and the River Doon as well as at several fisheries and lochs throughout the area. Many of the fisheries are open all year round and offer expert tuition and catering facilities as well as tackle shops providing equipment hire and sales.

From ancient ruins to magnificent mansions Ayrshire’s castles and stately homes vary from piles of rock to plush country homes and estates. Some are still privately owned or by the National Trust and are available for weddings and special occasions or have apartments for holiday lets. Many are open or partly open to the public at certain times of the year, with country parks with lots of walks, beautiful gardens and ranger led activities – up to date details are always available from Tourist Information.

In Ayrshire there are many opportunities for outdoor pursuits and sporting activities and many of our parks have wonderful facilities or packages incorporating activity breaks. However you may just prefer to relax, be pampered or just do your own thing. Whatever you want it’s right here in lovely Ayrshire!
