Banffshire Holiday Guide

Banffshire is a long and narrow county on the north eastern coast of the Grampian Highlands sandwiched between Morayshire and Aberdeenshire. The dramatic and breathtaking coastline is a place of unspoilt natural beauty home to dolphins, gannets, puffins, porpoises and the occasional whale. Away from the coast Banffshire has a scattering of small towns, villages and farmland and stretches right down to the Cairngorm Mountains.

The coastline is dotted with secluded coves, harbour towns and tiny fishing villages which have remained remarkably well preserved and which have resisted the advances of too much modern development. There are many way marked coastal paths some linking tiny villages and secluded beaches, where you can walk at a relaxing pace, enjoy the beautiful views and perhaps see the dolphins at play or the seabirds as the fish for their lunch.

The Banffshire Coast is an excellent place to start your exploration of the Malt Whisky Trail. Each of the 8 distilleries on the Trail is within easy driving distance of the coast, takes in the neighbouring counties and makes a pleasant day trip. You don’t have to be a whisky connoisseur to enjoy a visit to a distillery as there is plenty to interest the whole family including guided tours, coffee shops and gift shops.

Visitor attractions and activities in Banffshire include the Macduff Marine Aquarium, Banff Castle and the area has several excellent golf courses, including Cullen and Royal Tarlair. Surfing, and other watersports, with equipment hire and tuition available at Banff Links – excellent training, whether you are a complete beginner or wishing to improve your skills. There are no major shopping centres in Banffshire, though there lots of lovely little interesting shops where you’ll find something that little bit different. No motorways either– so if you’re looking for the perfect escape – you’ve found it!!
