Scotland is a country that has much to offer the tourist, whether they are looking for a leisurely break from the rush of modern life or an exciting holiday with much in the way of action, and the Inverness-shire area is one of the prime holiday locations in Scotland.

Stunning Inverness itself, considered by many the unofficial capital of Scotland, is a city that has everything to offer from historical building and legends to modern shops, bars and clubs, and the location of this beautiful and exciting city is simply outstanding. Close to the Moray Firth and next to the magnificent glens, Inverness is an excellent place to use as a base for a holiday in this part of Scotland, and with a wide variety of hotels and guest house, plus nearby holiday parks and other accommodation to choose from, much of the surrounding area can be explored without trouble.

And what there is to explore, too, for one of the major attractions in the area is absolutely world famous – Loch Ness, a sprawling and magnificent loch famous for the legendary Loch Ness monster – Nessie to her friends – and a place that exudes mystery and romance in one. Loch Ness is an absolute must for anyone visiting Inverness-shire, for it represents much of what the area is about. Dramatic and beautiful landscapes, mysterious tales and legends, and historical tales that go far beyond the usual.

The 23 mile long loch has much to offer on its banks, too, with the familiar and dramatic Urquhart Castle – a 500 year old fortified home – on the bank itself and many other villages and odd buildings along the way, and boat trips along the loch entice those looking for a chance meeting with the monster itself!

Loch Ness is part of the Great Glen, a stunning landscape feature that ends with the magnificent Ben Nevis at the inland end, and the Caledonian Canal, a massive engineering exercise that saw Thomas Telford slice a chasm through the country giving boats a chance to navigate from the Irish Sea to the Moray Firth, is a stunning sight in itself.

For walkers the 73mile long Great Glen Way takes you through this amazing part of the country and past some of Inverness-shire’s most famous sights, and is a wonderful route that is difficult to better anywhere in the UK.

Prehistoric sites abound in the Inverness-shire area, for this place has been inhabited for many thousands of years, but back at Inverness we find that modern life and legend mix more often than not in this wonderful and mysterious place. The city features a famous hill called Tomnahurich, and if you believe the local legend, this is where the Queen of the Faeries holds her court. With monsters, fairies and ancient castles and buildings all in the mix, who can resist the lure of Inverness and its surrounding countryside?

Scotland has many wonderful attractions, and Inverness-shire plays host to a great number of them with its traditional and very Scottish air, and there is much to entice tourists to this fascinating place.
