Perth and Kinross probably rates as the most popular holiday area of Scotland, partly due to the central location, just one hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh, but mostly for its natural beauty and wide range of attractions and year round outdoor activities. There are lots of lovely towns and villages to explore each with their own special charm and attraction.
Pitlochry nestles on the banks of the River Tay, with the famous dam and fish ladder, theatre and lovely shops. The villages of Birnham and Dunkeld separated by the River Tay, but adjoined by the elegant Thomas Telford designed bridge.
The beautiful Dunkeld Cathedral dating back as far as the 12th century is partly in ruins but there are still regular services held there. The smaller of the two villages is Birnham famous for the ancient Birnam Oak which is reputedly the last remaining oak of Birnam Wood, made famous by MacBeth.
Many adventure seekers enjoy the thrills of the country’s famous white water rivers. From Aberfeldy, there are group outings on the rivers Tay, Tummel and Feshie, white water rafting, river bugging and canyoning. If you can bear to take your eyes off the water to look at the scenery as you hurtle down river, you’ll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.
Skiing in Perthshire has enjoyed a great revival with the snowy weather of the last few winters making excellent skiing and winter sports at Aviemore, Glenshee and the Lecht.
For golfers Gleneagles one of Scotland’s most famous golf courses is one of many in the area with over 60 further courses in surrounding Angus, Dundee and the Kingdom of Fife including St. Andrews and Carnoustie.
Once you’ve soaked up the stunning scenery of the outdoors, head into the city of Perth to find shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and theatres. Framed by two grand public parks and the striking Tay Street promenade, Perth is a lovely city offering the best in shopping, nightlife and culture.
