Largely coastal, you are never far away from the sea, and the miles of lovely coastline, have pretty towns, villages and harbours all just dying to be explored. There is so much to see, beautiful scenery, quiet country roads and many attractions and outdoor activities to be enjoyed.
Things to see and do include the Galloway Forest, covering an area of 293 square miles stretching into the neighbouring counties of Kirkcudbrightshire and Ayrshire. There are three visitor’s centres in Wigtownshire Glentrool, Clatteringshawes and Kirroughtree. Using these as a base, you’ll find marked trails for walkers and cyclist, sculptures and picnic areas and as well as having tearooms open from March till the end of October, there are also special events throughout the year.
Bladnoch is Scotland’s most southerly distillery and offers guided tours, visitor’s centre and gift shop as well as occasionally offering whisky making courses. For book lovers Bladnoch is almost joined to Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, so worthwhile to visit both.
The small town of Wigtown has 18 book shops and around 25 book related business and holds various events and festivals throughout the year including the Spirit of Bladnoch & Book Town Weekend and regular Farmer’s Markets selling and excellent variety of locally produced goods.
The Gem Rock Museum in Creetown is also a must, with hundreds of interesting exhibits, interactive displays and of course the tearoom serves delicious freshly made food all day.
There are several gardens throughout the area open to the public, Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and the almost semi tropical Logan Gardens, whose exhibits include exotic plants and trees usually more favoured to warmer climates than Scotland’s.
There are several excellent golf courses throughout the area, including Newton Stewart, Glenluce, Stranraer, Wigown and Monreith, most with facilities for refreshments as well as a challenging game of golf.
Day trips to Ireland from Stranraer and Cairnryan are an excellent option for a day out, sailing to either Belfast or Larne. As well as just enjoying the pleasure trip on the ferry, frequent sailings make it possible to have plenty of time ashore to enjoy shopping and sightseeing.
Wigtownshire offers an excellent variety of accommodation for visitors, whether you’re looking for a seaside or countryside park, luxury lodges, caravan or cottage in the town or country, it’s all here – just make sure you take a long enough holiday to enjoy it all!
