Carmarthenshire’s towns are friendly, interesting and full of character, no huge modern shopping centres, just small, specialised shops with big personalities, a refreshing change to the usual High Street shopping experience. This fine old county, the Garden of Wales, is often overlooked as a place of outstanding natural beauty but now more and more visitors are becoming aware of all it has to offer.

Glorious gardens are the local’s pride and joy
, no wonder the county is known as the Garden of Wales. One of the many special gardens in the county and one of the most remarkable garden restoration projects in the UK is Aberglasney Gardens. Once buried under centuries of decay and neglect, its dramatic rescue led to the discovery of some of the most important historical features belonging to a bygone age of gardens. The magnificent mansion house has also been lovingly restored to reveal its 400 year old secret and this year marks the 10th anniversary of its outstanding restoration.

There’s Gold in them there hills!! Not something you’d normally associate with Wales but Dolaucothi Gold Mines were in operation for more than 2,000 years, ending in 1938. Guided tours take you back to experience the conditions of the Roman, Victorian and 1930s underground workings. See and hear the 1930s mine and mine machinery, have a go at gold panning and take the opportunity to experience the frustrations of searching for real gold – and keep what you find!

Pendine is one of Carmarthen’s most popular beaches with dramatic cliffs, rock pool and one of Wales’ longest sandy beaches. This beach was used during World War II to practise for the ‘D-Day‘ landings and is also the setting for many land speed trials. At the far end of this expanse, huge cockle beds are harvested all year round, reflecting the pure nature of the Carmarthen Bay waters.

If sitting still is not for you, then try out some of the range of activities on offer – guaranteed to thrill! Canoeing, kayaking or rafting along the Teifi Valley or a peaceful paddle along the coast. See it all on horse-back. The Marros Riding Centre offers a wide range of equestrian-themed activities including beach rides, mountain hacks and woodland treks. The Morfa Bay Adventure Centre in Pendine offers you a walk on the wildside with activities including abseiling, coastal climbing, surfing, kayaking, caving, sand yachting, hill walking, assault courses and archery.

These suggestions may all seem a bit too strenuous, so alternatively you can relax on the riverbanks of the Tywi, Cothi and Teifi or just find a sunny spot and chill out on the beach.

This is only a small example of the delights that Carmarthenshire has to offer. It’s a great place for families or couples for a short break or a longer holiday. There is so much to see and do and a wonderful selection of holiday accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.
