Powys

Being Wales’ largest county, Powys makes up a quarter of the country with two of Britain’s most famous rivers, the Wye and the Severn, having their sources within the county. The wonderfully varied terrain of the Brecon Beacons National Park is criss-crossed by ancient tracks and lanes, perfect for pony trekking, and keen walkers will head to the Offa’s Dyke long distance path.

The beautiful Lake Vyrnwy is one of the region’s loveliest man-made lakes and a superb RSPB site. As well as having various events on throughout the year it has five lovely nature trails, with guided walks available, information centre, shop, cafe, picnic area and toilet facilities. Some parts of the trails are suitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs. There are also three hides, with one suitable for wheelchair access. You can also enjoy a pleasant cycle round the lake perimeter, just over 12 miles and it’s a quite a flat route with little motor traffic. Cycle hire is available close by.

There are a variety of centres offering a selection of outdoor activities including Adventures Activity Centre based in Porthcawl . Try surfing, quad biking, paintballing, high ropes course, gorge walking, white water rafting, sea kayaking and more, if you’ve any energy left!

History enthusiasts will be drawn to Powis Castle, a magnificent medieval fortress towering above its famous gardens and commanding glorious views over the valley. In the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells, visitors can still sample the healing waters, and book lovers will be in heaven at Hay-on-Wye’s bookstores – there are more than 30 of them to explore.

Spend a delightful few hours cruising through fine views on the beautiful Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and enjoy an abundance of wildlife. Travel on this historical waterway, a fantastic feat of engineering, built before roads and railways. Cruise through a canal lock and over an aqueduct that carries the canal over the River Usk. Public trips and private charters for special occasions are available, and refreshment and souvenirs can be bought on board. There is access and space for wheelchairs, though restricted to two on any one trip.
